Before & After: Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair

This poor, poor, pitiful Egg Chair - so beautiful, but so in need of some TLC! This is how the poor boy arrived at our workshop.

As we do with all these pieces that have a foam covered fiberglass frame, everything is removed down to the fiberglass (if the chair is older than 2 years, it is nearly impossible to salvage the original foam as it has usually bonded to the fabric - so when the fabric is removed, the foam usually comes off as well).

The chair and ottoman was completely restored, including the metal legs, and reupholstered in cobalt Maharam Hallingdal fabric.

Classic Leather Club Chairs

We're thinking smoking lounge here, because library chair just doesn't do these club chairs justice! Visualize dark rooms, roaring fire, cognac, a cigar, and okay, some books. Our client does indeed plan to place these in his smoking lounge (not man cave, mind you).

The rich brown leather is so soft, and thanks to the down seat and slight curve to the back, you feel cocooned in comfort as soon as you sit. A perfect chair to relax and lounge in. 

The nail head detail up the front arm and along the back sides are a beautiful subtle detail; just enough to make the club chairs interesting while not vying for attention from the design and comfort.

Joaquim Tenreiro inspired Sofa

Joaquim Tenreiro was one of the leading furniture designers and visual artists in the mid-20th century. He was born in Portugal, and immigrated to Brazil in the late 1920's. He was one of the first Brazilian furniture designers to adopt European modernist methods. This piece is inspired by a sofa he designed in the late 1950's early 1960's and features a thin, delicate rim that continues from the base, curving up the arm and around the back.

He often used indigenous Brazilian hardwoods in his work and kept the local climate in mind by keeping his pieces light, often using wicker or cane. This piece obviously was not designed in that respect, but the curve detail is so beautiful and the tapered leg is so characteristic of that era.

A thick wool mohair was used to upholster the piece.

Restored Pollock Executive Armchair

Is it possible to feel sorry for a piece of furniture? We sort of felt sorry for this well-loved Pollock Executive Armchair when it arrived at our workshop! On the one hand, it's wonderful to see pieces used so often they shred! On the other hand...please let us fix this poor boy up! And we did!

The original chair was covered in fabric, which as you can see, wears harder than leather. We completely restored and reupholstered this piece, with beautiful white leather, and cleaned up the metal until it gleamed again.

This chair is still in production and can be purchased through Knoll. It's one of the most comfortable chairs, due to the design, which cradles your body.

Edward Wormley inspired Leather Chaise Lounge

Edward Wormley was truly an inspirational furniture designer. His designs were timeless, elegant, and modern, and were designed with comfort.

This chaise was inspired by a piece he designed for Dunbar in the 1960's, and we've tried to stay true to the detail and aesthetic of the original with the light tufted single seat, loose back pillows and gorgeous wood base.

The leather our client chose was butter-soft, and the single top stitch detail is perfect.

The walnut base is simply stunning, with the corner curve detail. And here is a link to an Edward Wormley Dunbar sofa we reupholstered in June.

Reupholstered BLUE Herman Miller Eames Chair

This is something we don't see often - a gorgeous rosewood eames chair, reupholstered in royal blue leather! It's actually quite striking, and a really fun choice!

We love it when clients aren't afraid to take a chance and step out of the box, and this client certainly did. The leather is soft and supple, and the color is so rich. It will surely be a focal point in the room!

The wood was still in very good shape, so we just cleaned it up. The rosewood pattern is very subtle, which works well with the vibrancy of the leather.

Silk Upholstered Bed II

Apparently, it's bed week. You didn't get the memo? Sorry. This version is similar to the king sized upholstered bed we shared earlier this week, with a few modifications: this bed is made with a fully integrated box spring, so all the client has to do is add their mattress. We are also using dark stained walnut feet on this bed, instead of a full recessed base.

Another change was the trim detail, shown below. This trim is a cord welt and the contrast against the bronze silk fabric is beautiful. This is another perfect example of how specific a client can be when customizing a piece of furniture for their home, or a clients.

King Size Silk Upholstered Bed

We hope you had a wonderful holiday! We're back in the shop and continuing on some January deadlines; we'll share those pieces as they are ready. But today, we have a king size upholstered bed we finished just before the holiday break.

This piece has an upholstered box base, which allows the client to add their own box spring inside and gives the bed a complete upholstered appearance. The attached padded headboard has a grosgrain welt detail which gives it a framed appearance.

It's a very pretty, and simple, detail that kicks the design up a notch.

The recessed base is walnut with a dark finish, and you can see how the wood curves to match the curve of the upholstered box base (no stubbed toes in the middle of the night here!).
