Custom Leather Ottoman

We just finished this (large) beautiful leather ottoman for a client. Since the piece will be used for both seating and as a coffee table, we constructed a very supportive and stable interior system, which was then covered with pieced suede. The ottoman sits on custom made chrome feet.

Custom Armchair & Ottoman

Not all our work here at Classic Design is modern. We recently completed a pair of classic armchairs & ottomans for a large out-of-state project.

While the design has traditional lines we incorporated many of our contemporary methods and techniques, including our proprietary and state-of-the-art suspension for the seat and back - as always, comfort is paramount.

The armchair & matching ottoman were upholstered in Gramercy Park, in Lagoon, by Glant.

Another beautiful example of the high end upholstery work we do here at Classic Design.

Restored Knoll Bertoia Diamond Chair

I wish I had had the forethought to take a photo of this chair when it came in. We get so busy here that sometimes, oftentimes, there are not enough hours in the day. But then when a restoration turns out so beautifully, as this one did, it would be helpful to remember just how sorry these classic pieces can get when they are found in an dusty attic or garage.

The Knoll Bertoia Diamond chair was designed by sculptor Harry Bertoia in 1952, when he was experimenting with industrial wire rods. One of the results of these experiments is the Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair. "If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes through them," Bertoia has said. Several seating models were made, and then Bertoia returned to his work focusing mainly on sculpture.

According to Knoll, this piece remains a 'fascinating study in bent metal and is a fixture of mid-century design.' We couldn't agree more.  The frame is welded steel with rods in chrome or bonded rilsan and comes in a variety of finishes.

In this case, the frame was badly damaged, pitted and was in pieces. We restored the metal, powder coated it and made a new seat cushion using Kvadrat Hallingdal in color 173, which is a dark, steely grey.

It's truly a beautiful work of art...but you can see that already, right? *wink*

Before & After: Reupholstered Salon Chairs

When we say we perform a wide range of services, we really mean it! Recently, Classic Design was commissioned to reupholster three salon chairs from a private residence - two were make up chairs and one was a shampoo chair.

These chairs were not without their challenges, as both had complicated electrical connections and wiring that had to be preserved, kept in place and remembered. We took detailed photos along the way so the chairs could be reconstructed once the reupholstery was complete.

This is just another great example of the varied restoration and reupholstery work we do in our workshop - no job is too small and no project is too challenging!

Restored Bellini chairs

These chairs were designed in 1973 by world renowned Italian designer and architect Mario Bellini,  for Cassina, and are called the Tentazione Armchair.

We restored them with new hand-stitched leather covers in the exact way in which they were originally made. They are amazingly comfortable.
