Before & After: Swan Chair

We just reupholstered a classic Swan chair - designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958, it has a fiberglass reinforced shell with molded foam, and was originally designed for the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. It has a beautiful organic shape, which sits on an aluminun 4 star base.

Even though it's gorgeous in bright colors, we updated this one and reupholstered it in steel grey.

Custom Queen Beds

We just finished two queen size custom beds for a client on the east coast. Both are fabricated in oak with a dark brown finish for the headboard & frame, recessed base, and linen upholstered box springs. The bed above is upholstered in a natural linen, while the bed below is upholstered in a granite color linen. Both versions are beautiful.

This is a popular design of ours, previously made and shared - shown here in full & twin size.

More of our custom beds can be viewed on the Classic Design website - please visit and take a look!

Custom JMF style Sofa

We just finished 2 matching sofas, styled after Jan Michel Frank, one of the most influential designer/decorators of Parisian style in the 1930's - 1940's. This a very popular design choice with sharp lines and rectangular silhouette. The beauty of this style lies in the simplicity of the design, and it is one sofa style that is our most popular custom request.

This particular set was upholstered in Romo, Huckaback Truffle with dark walnut feet.

Before & after: Reupholstered Armchair

We just finished the reupholstery of this armchair, which, as you can see, was in dire need of a makeover!

The original fabric was worn and torn, and the beautiful arms were dulled, scratched, and pitted from years of use.

The first thing that we did, after we stripped all the upholster, was determine the new finish. We decided to go darker, which would bring a nice, rich sheen to the wood.

After filling, sanding and new stain, the wood is gorgeous. Since the client really wanted to update the look of the chair, she chose a natural linen fabric to complement the wood. And to modernize the style, instead of the original light tufting and button treatment, we did a simple but beautiful double top stitch, pieced detail on the seat back, bringing in the lower portion to give a bit of lumbar support and style.

Finally, a self welt was added along the bottom and sides.

A much loved chair is ready for many more years of use! Click on the photo below to view it larger!

Custom Sectional Sofa

We've been neglecting the blog, but not our clients! It has been a busy spring in the workshop. We recently finished this sectional sofa for a client in Aspen, Colorado. At 11', it's to be a nice, comfortable spot in the family room of a mountain home. Upholstered in a Nancy Corzine velvet, it has a recessed base, which makes this large piece appear to 'float' above the floor.
