What's for sale? New on the blog!

Gehry Cross Check Chair

We've added a new page to the navigation at the top of the blog - For Sale! Every once in a while, we purchase a piece and restore it. Often, our longtime customers will check with us to see if we have a certain piece they are looking for. Right now, we have a few pieces that we've added to the For Sale page, and will continue to add more pieces as time permits.

Velvet Prototype Sample Sofa

All the pieces listed are available for local pick up at our workshop in Torrance, California. We do not offer packing and/or shipping services, so if you are out of the area, you will need to arrange for your own transportation. We work with several moving and transportation companies, and can provide their contact information. If you are interested in any of the pieces listed, feel free to contact us at info@classicdesignla.com . Payment can be made with Paypal, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and of course, cash!

Custom Armless Sectional Sofa

We recently finished a custom sectional sofa for a corporate office in Century City. We designed the piece in house, featuring an exposed wood frame, and leather seat and back cushions that were lightly tufted.

The attached corner side table featured a stone top, and the legs had a dark bronze patina finish (the plastic feet were just for protection and removed during installation).

This is a wonderful example of our custom work, from inception to completion - in this case, the client had an idea that we brought to reality. As always, if you have an idea for a custom piece, feel free to call us at 310.324.1600, or send an email to info@classicdesignla.com .

Custom Silk Velvet Sofa

This is another piece we finished last week - this sofa is 8 feet long with wide arms and double back cushions, for extra support and comfort.

The sofa is upholstered in a gorgeous blue silk velvet called Polidoro Nattier.

Before & After: Pierre Jeanneret Cross Armchairs

We received 4 of these Pierre Jeanneret armchairs, to be restored. The client bought them at auction, sight unseen, and the layers of dark stain hid the character of the wood, and the leather was in need of replacement.

We completely stripped them, lightened the stain and reupholstered them in the same distressed leather as this sofa. The pieces will be used in the same breakfast room of the clients home. These chairs were designed and made between 1952- 1956, and were popular during that period in the most ordinary settings, such as schools and offices. It's typical to find stampings, or hand carved letters in the wood of these chairs.

The four chairs will be placed around this table that we made to match.

Can you see the top of the leg through the top of the table? It's the small details that make certain pieces so special.

Custom Leather Sofa

We recently finished an extensive job, which I'll be sharing as time allows this week. One of the pieces was this 8 foot, three seat sofa.

The style of this sofa is inspired by the beautiful design of Florence Knoll, however this piece has none of the tufting that is Knoll's trademark. Instead, the lines and silhouette are clean and smooth.

It is covered with Ashbury Hides distressed Italian cowhide in a butterscotch color called Steeplechase Sand. This substantial piece sits on custom made sleigh style base, finished in bronze.

Custom Outdoor Cushions

We recently finished some outdoor cushions for a settee, chair & ottoman by Rose Tarlow. The client didn't like the cushions that came with the set, so we made custom cushions with Brunschwig & Fils fabric, and Perennials cotton cord.

It's important to note that different materials must be used for outdoor furniture cushions. A higher density foam for cushions, and a different fill altogether for pillows, are required to withstand the elements and exposure to the sun.

Of course, for this project, a precise template was made to accommodate the lines and curves of these beautiful pieces. We hope the client enjoys the pieces for years to come!

Before & After: Ward Bennett Scissor Chairs

We just restored these two Ward Bennett Scissor Chairs for a client. When they arrived, as you can see, the leather was worn and torn, and the wood had been bleached by the sun for years.

Ward Bennett designed this chair in 1968, and it was quite a popular style. It was manufactured by Brickel and said to be his most comfortable chair. The chair was made in both a wood version and in steel.

We love the warmth that the wood has when paired with leather. We completely refinished the wood, bringing it back to a beautiful luster, and reupholstered it in all new leather.

Before & After: Chadwick Modular Seating

We just reupholstered this Chadwick Modular Seating sofa for none other than Don Chadwick himself.

Mr. Chadwick designed this piece in 1974 for Herman Miller, using modern materials, molding processes and mechanisms that pioneered the market for furniture design. These pieces were reupholstered in Kvadrat Tonus.

As you may know, he also designed the Aeron Chair in 1994, which brought him national attention and is still one of the most sought after office chairs on the market.
