Classic CK Sofa

When we featured the CK Armchair last week, we realized we had never uploaded photos of the CK Sofa. This is a beautiful, classic sofa, with a recessed base, single seat & double back cushions.

This sofa was custom made for a client in Paris, and as mentioned, was featured in a layout in Architectural Digest Italia - it looks gorgeous in its' home setting!

Happy Thanksgiving from Classic Design!

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours! As we all give thanks today, we are grateful to our entire team of artisans for the beautiful work, and dedication they show through their craftsmanship. Above is just a small sampling of what has been going on lately in our workshop.

In light of all that is happening in the world today, we are also so thankful for our armed forces, and the people who serve, for keeping us safe and free.

Enjoy your holiday and time with your family, friends and loved ones.

Modern Daybed

This daybed was fabricated in beautiful ivory linen, and is a companion piece to the ivory tuxedo sofa we featured a couple of weeks ago. The wood base is finished the same, and has the same clean lines as the wood base on the sofa.

It's difficult to see in the photos, unfortunately, but the cushion is tufted and includes a bolster on one end. This would also be beautiful in a silk velvet with bolsters on both ends.

Custom Oak Ottoman

This ottoman was made to sit at the foot of the bed for one of our clients. The base is fabricated in oak and has a natural finish. Since this is a custom piece, we can fabricate it in any species of wood and finish it in any way - the beauty of customization!

A line of nail heads in a French natural finish separates the fabric from the wood. The attached cushion is fabric, but we have also made this ottoman with a leather upholstered cushion, as well as with a dark finish & dark leather.

CK Armchair

The CK Armchair is one of our most popular armchairs, and its' comfort is unsurpassed. The lines and aesthetic are clean, classic and timeless - and the style is actually a chair version of one of our popular sofas, the CK Sofa. This sofa was also featured in Architectural Digest Italia in 2012.

Its size is a little scaled down, so it's perfect for tighter spaces. Since all of our pieces are custom made, the dimensions can be modified, so this piece can work in a variety of spaces and settings.

The oak feet are slightly tapered, and can be customized as to wood type & finish as well. This chair was upholstered in a gorgeous silk mohair, that has the softest, most plush hand. Truly, a gorgeous armchair.

Restored Palo Alto chair

This poor chair! It had been badly reupholstered many years ago in vinyl by its' previous owner, and as you can see, the tufted back cushion did not hold up well over the years!

It's called the Palo Alto chair, and it was designed by California designer Byron Botker and produced by the Landes Manufacuring Company in the 1970's. Which makes sense, because it is pure disco era!

We brought it back to life with a complete restoration, and reupholstered it in black leather.

Our research discovered that this chair is part of the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

We Stand United – Paris Solidarité!

In light of the terrible events that occurred in Paris this weekend, we wanted to drop in with a quick post. Terror does not stop democracy and peace. If anything, it advances the concept of peace as people from all over join together to show their support and solidarity with the people of Paris, and the world. #notafraid

Completely Restored Charles Pfister for Knoll dining table

Sometimes, pieces come into our workshop in such sad shape. And when they are rare pieces, such as this Charles Pfister dining table for Knoll, your heart almost breaks at the sight of the extent of the damage.

This Pfister table was badly damaged by a fire, and initially, we weren't even sure if we could save it. The top was badly burned, with deep marks, and the chrome metal inlay (on the tabletop side) was bent and scratched. We didn't want to replace the inlay because we wanted to preserve the integrity of the piece and its' history.

It's very difficult to find a Charles Pfister dining table; our research only uncovered a smaller card table - nothing of this size. The top is lacquered wood and besides the beautiful chrome inlay, it also has chrome legs.

We completely restored this piece in our workshop, no new parts were used! Here is how it turned out, what do you think?

Quite a labor of love on this one! It was worth every minute!

Custom Single Seat Sofa

We finished a pair of these sofas for a client recently. The sofa features a single seat, filled with down, to allow the client (and friends) to lay across the sofa if desired.

The fabric is a beautiful neutral with double top stitch details on the arms & cushions, with a full recessed base and low block feet, in dark stained oak. This beautiful sofa is perfect for a living or family room, in a classic, contemporary or casual setting.

Restored Eames Lounge Chair in Red Leather

We wanted to share this recent restoration with you, because it's not often you see an Eames Lounge Chair in a leather other than Black or Brown! Our client loved her previous red leather, so we reupholstered it in new leather.

The rosewood had a gorgeous grain, and restoration really brought out the character of the wood.

Gio Ponti style Arm Stool

Gio Ponti was a 20th century Italian architect, industrial and furniture designer. One of his most famous furniture designs, the Superleggera, is still in production today.

This stool was custom made for a client to sit at her vanity, and is higher than the original. The design is very organic and sculptural, and the rose velvet fabric is a perfect complement to the walnut frame.

Restored & Reupholstered Eames 3473 Sofa

This is quite a before & after post! Can you believe our client bought this rare Eames 3473 sofa sight unseen? He had it delivered directly to our workshop and saw it for the first time when he brought in his fabric. Needless to say, it needed a complete overhaul. These are fun projects; we love transforming pieces from this, to this:

As mentioned, we completely restored and reupholstered the piece, as well as the metal. Our client chose a classic bright Maharam Hallingdal fabric, which is perfect.

The Eames 3473 sofa was only produced between 1964 and 1973, so there aren't many models. The frame is cast aluminum and the seat and angled back feature channel welts running horizontally. It's quite a bit different from the Eames Compact sofa, which is still in production through Herman Miller.
